About Wigry National Park

Established in 1989, Wigry National Park is located in the picturesque region of Podlaskie Voivodeship in northeastern Poland, near the border with Belarus and Lithuania. The park covers diverse landscapes shaped by glacial activity, including over 40 lakes, of which the largest is Lake Wigry. This extensive water system is intertwined with marshes, peat bogs, and old-growth forests dominated by pine, fir, and spruce trees, providing habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna. The park is a critical refuge for many species, including beavers, otters, the rare white-tailed eagle, and elusive lynx. The wetlands and lakes support abundant birdlife, making it a premier destination for birdwatching. Wigry National Park also boasts historical and cultural heritage with traditional wooden architecture, old mills, and small villages that offer insight into regional customs. Visitors can explore the park on marked trails, by canoeing or kayaking across its interconnected lakes and rivers, and through guided tours that showcase both nature and history. Popular recreation includes hiking, cycling, fishing, and winter skiing during snowy months. The park is also part of the Natura 2000 network, emphasizing its importance for biodiversity conservation. Its tranquil waters and lush forests provide a peaceful retreat for visitors seeking outdoor adventure amidst unspoiled wilderness.
